Bilateral Soleus

12th July 2011

There are two major muscles in the lower leg involved in generating power through the ankle.  The gastrocnemius attaches above the knee and the soleus attaches below the knee so to strengthen this you need to keep the knee bent.  The soleus is a muscle involved both in running and also works to keep the ankle fixed when cycling to ensure maximal transition of force from the major muscles of the buttocks and thigh to the pedals.  The exercise can be done on the flat initially then progressed to standing with the front of the foot balanced on the edge of a step allowing the heel to drop below the step to increase the loading.
