Many patients, especially those with more chronic pain conditions or where there has been acute injury, may require medical management in addition to physiotherapy, pain education and sometimes clinical psychology input. People in pain should be able to expect pain relief as a basic part of their overall management. We work alongside doctors who specialise in Pain Management and, whilst most of our patients probably do not wish to taken medication as a longer term option, it can be very useful, just in the short term, to provide a window where they are more comfortable, able to get proper sleep and engage fully in their physical conditioning programmes.
Without proper guidance, many patients resort to self-prescribing simple painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs that are available over the counter. However, these are not always the most effective options for their specific conditions and getting expert advice often results in much quicker resolution of their symptoms. Occasionally, despite their best efforts, some patients fail to respond to these more conservative treatment options and doctors specialising in pain management will be able to offer a variety of different types of injection as well as various other more invasive interventions.
