Injuries of the knee split into two categories. Traumatic and overload. Traumatic injuries commonly seen are meniscal (cartilage) tears and ligament sprains or ruptures, including anterior cruciate ruptures common in football and skiing. Fractures are also common around the knee and patella.
The overload injuries include patellofemoral pain syndrome, patella tendinitis or ITB friction syndrome (‘runner’s knee’) commonly caused by smaller but repetitive lateral and rotational stresses over a longer period time, ultimately leading to irritation of tissues and pain.
