Physiotherapy has a major role in treating injuries in this region. Calf strength and flexibility must be optimised with specific exercises. Manual therapy and soft tissue massage techniques are used to normalise tissue compliance, while correct dynamic alignment of the entire lower limb is optimised with relevant muscle conditioning exercises. Acupuncture, stretches or strengthening exercises can also be utilised as required. Taping may be used to help improve the pain and muscle use while it is injured.
Following a muscle tear you should expect a six week period in order to return to sport. There is usually a graduated return but overloading the muscle before it is healed can lead to it re tearing. Pain is not an indicator of recovery with muscle tears.
