A full examination of the back, hip and knee are required in order to eliminate pain being referred from problems in these joints. Irritation in the back can lead to pain being referred down the nerves and felt in the leg.
An examination of the mobility and movement of the nervous system is required where the leg is moved in a combination of very specific patterns to put tension on the nerves and an assessment of the available range of movement during these tests is taken.
If the injury is from the muscles the assessment will work through how flexible and strong the muscles are. Direct palpation of the muscles is also helpful to feel for local damage or muscle tightness.
